Readers Services
The Loan Dept. provides lending of books and non-book materials. The available book-stock presents information from all areas of knowledge. The most popular fictional and specialized literature in Bulgarian and foreign languages is accessible here. The book-stock is being updated with new titles of Bulgarian and foreign authors reflecting the current trends in science, poetry and fiction. An automated system assists in lending book, as an actual reader's subscription is necessary.
The Reading Room provides free access to encyclopaedias, dictionaries and reference books from all areas of knowledge. All the books limited to just a few examples, previous year's periodicals, as well as a wide range of Bulgarian and foreign language magazines currently subscribed can be accessed in the General Information Reading Room.
Periodicals Reading Room is established in the Library where the current daily, weekly and monthly papers and magazines are accessible.
In the Catalog Room the readers find out the literature wealth of the Library with the assistance of the library's qualified specialists. There is a system of conventional catalogs there: a subject catalog and an alphabetical one. Readers are provided with computers accessing the online catalog and local network databases.
Rare and Valuable Collections include titles which are of great value - first editions of Bulgarian and foreign classical literature, first book translations, antique and unique cover books, unusual format books, books with autographs, etc. The collection of books from the Bulgarian National Revival comprises of unique titles from the national bibliography only possessed by the Varna Library. In 1993 was issued the Catalog of Books from the Bulgarian National Revival in Pencho Slaveykov Library.
The Interlibrary Loan Section provides the readers who have an active subscription of at least 6 months with the opportunity to use books and articles from libraries all over the country and abroad in the Library Reading Rooms.
Children's and Teen Dept. submits about 160 000 volumes of books appropriate to the interests and needs of its readers. The Department’s book-stock is being constantly updated with new editions of scientific and fictional literature. The young audience is assisted by an automated database of thematic book and periodical articles. The Department’s readers are provided with an Internet access, a scanner and a copier.
Initially established as Music Section, it set up itself as a specialized Art Department in 1979. It collects the library materials of all the arts.
The Department possesses collections of books, graphic albums, periodicals, notes, records, Audio- and Video- cassettes, CDs and DVDs.
The musical studio is fitted with modern equipment for playing and listening to all genres pieces of music.
The users have the opportunity to watch selected Bulgarian and foreign movies and documentaries.
The American Corner was opened in November 2004 together with the US Department of State and US Embassy in Bulgaria. One thousand volumes of reference books, encyclopaedias, fiction, science fiction, etc. in English have been donated so far. There are encyclopaedias and reference information on CDs and DVDs, movies and documentaries and appropriate equipment for reading and seeing them: a television, a video and a DVD player. The American Corner Reading Room is a modern information centre which offers new reference information in humanities and science, various cultural activities: exhibitions, concerts, writers' visits, joint projects etc.
On 12th of October 2005, during the visit of His Excellency Mr. John Beyrle, US Embassador to Bulgaria, the American Corner was called after the name of Henry Shumacher - US minister plenipotentiary in Bulgaria between 1930 and 1934.
The German Reading Room was opened in 1993 together with the Goethe Institute and the Embassy of Germany in Bulgaria. It possesses about 8000 volumes of books, references, encyclopaedias, dictionaries, albums in all fields of knowledge, and also periodicals, Audio- and Video- Cassettes, CDs and DVDs. The Children’s Section helps kids make their first steps in learning German. Almost all library units except from encyclopaedias, reference books, dictionaries and last issues of papers and magazines can be borrowed here. Readers are provided with an access to the Internet, a copier, as well as with audio- and video- equipment. In the German Reading Room a person specially trained and authorized by Goethe Institute twice a week consults teachers in German language. Many seminars, meetings, film shows and thematic exhibitions are held here. Twice a year the German Reading Room’ s book-stock is updated with recently published editions in Germany.
The Reference and Bibliographic Dept. is an information mediator between readers and the literary heritage. Subject bibliographic databases have being developed by the Department since 1991. An online union catalog of foreign periodicals collected in the main northeast Bulgarian libraries is being maintained here. The Department coordinates publishing both the conventional and online bibliographic indexes of the Library. The Reference Section offers to its users a documentary and informational search, as well as finding and submitting bibliographic and photographic information.
The Regional History Dept. is an information archive of the history, development and present day of Varna municipality and the region of Varna. The Department was established in the 60ies as a part of the Reference and Bibliographic Dept. Over 2000 volumes of books, pamphlets, albums, photographs, posters and almost all periodicals which have been published in Varna since 1878 can be found here. The reference tools comprise both conventional and online card-indexes. The city of Varna and the stages of its development are chronicled through the collection of photos and post-cards. A special place is held by the photographs of Carl Albrecht made to order by the municipality of Varna in 1890, which are at the root of ‘Old Varna’ project. The ‘Varna Town Archive’ is a unique collection of documents about the development of Varna, persons and events relevant to its history, as well as published and unpublished materials.
The Community Information Center provides readers with information services based on the new information technology and Internet like e-resources, online encyclopaedias, full text data bases: CIELA.net, EBSCO and analytic publications of Focus Agency. The web page of the Center is developed to serve as a portal for local recourses related to citizens’ problems. As a part of the information space, the Center provides opportunities to search in its own data bases and in the national bibliography, as well. It is equipped with up-to-date computers and provides scanning documents possessed by the Library.
The function of the Acquisition Dept. is to offer a wide range of newly published titles to all categories of readers. The Library stock is being created, supplemented and updated in this section. By the Legal Deposit Law the Library is entitled to receive without charge one copy of all publications printed in Bulgaria. Besides, a wide variety of books are being purchased by the Department. Many materials are from donations and book-exchange. About 12000 copies of book and non-book materials are registered in the Library stock every year. Since 1990 the registration and the deduction from the stock have been automated.
This is a section of the main in which the library policy in classification and cataloging of the book-stocks is accomplished. The books start their way to the readers from here and all the information about them is revealed by both conventional and online catalogs.
In the Periodicals Dept. an online catalog of papers and magazines received by the Library is supported. Readers can use about 7000 titles in Bulgarian and foreign languages.
The responsibilities of the Information Technology Dept. include:
1. System maintenance, upgrade of the hardware and update of the system software and application programs in the Library.
2. System support, development and structural update of the Library Databases – including local Databases and Online Catalogs. Support of the Union Catalog of foreign periodicals collected in the main north-east Bulgarian libraries.
3. Support of both the local network /Intranet/ and Internet connection.
4. Support and update of the Library Web Server.
Other requirements to the engineering staff are to specify, configure, install, replace and support the workstations and network equipment /hardware and software, network servers, etc/. To provide both the readers and library staff with the most efficient network services and resources is one of the Department’s responsibilities, which is coordinated with the Library Management.
